Atlanta Portrait Artist Workshop - Day 9 Demo

July 18, 2012
Completed 2nd Refinement Layer

Fourth Demo

Today I continued to develop my demonstration painting. I started out by oiling out the painting. First I scumbled over the skin and then began to restate my flesh colors. Next I developed the jacket and lastly worked on the face a bit more.

Scumbled Face and Background
Initial Refinement of Jacket and Restated Hair
Further Refinement of Skin and Jacket
Completed 2nd Refinement Layer

So far, so good! I'll finish up this painting on Friday. My students will be painting tomorrow (Thursday) and finish their work on Saturday.

Marvin Mattelson is now conducting his classes and workshops online in Full HD 1080p through his Fine Art Portrait Academy. For further information, or to register for an upcoming offering, please follow this link to his teaching page.

Do you prefer oleogel as opposed to just straight linseed to oil out the painting before you begin?

Hi Tod. Yes I do. It’s just linseed oil with fumed silica added. It goes on more evenly than straight linseed oil. I’ve been using the past year and highly recommend it.

Update: I'm back to using Linseed Oil. The Oleogel adversely affected drying times.

Thanks Tod. Well, you have one more shot at a workshop this year, starting two weeks from Monday at SVA. It would be awesome if you could make it. It’s been too long.
