When Jennifer and Patrick visited Marvin's studio to discuss their portrait, they were very taken with some of the surreal paintings he had created during his illustration career. They asked if he could incorporate those kinds of elements into his depiction of themselves, and he was thrilled at the opportunity to tap into the full measure of his creativity.

Th end result was this double, almost full length, portrait using symbolism to depict their out-of-the-box approach to life. Amidst the complexity of the composition, Marvin was able to focus attention on their likenesses by contrasting their clothing values and playing the colors of their skin-tones against the blues in the background,
